Southern Utah and Lake Powell Family Vacation

A few weeks ago we went on a vacation with my side of the family to the gorgeous Lake Powell in
Southern Utah/Arizona. I grew up going to Lake Powell with my cousins every single summer, sometimes even twice a summer on my grandpa’s houseboat and it was the highlight for us. There is nothing more beautiful than the views there with the orange rocks, canyons, and warm water. It really feels like a piece of heaven being there on the boat all day, so we were all super excited for this trip when my mom planned it last year. We had our house boat all ready to go and then Coronavirus hit and we found out just days before our trip that we couldn’t get the houseboat launched into the water at the Wahweap Marina. So we had to scramble and come up with a plan B which actually turned out to be great. We stayed at the hotel that’s close to the Marina so we could launch the ski boat in the morning and stay out on the water until we were ready to leave at night and go back to the hotel. Everyone in my family couldn’t make the trip so we had just enough people to fit on the boat and we stayed out there all day. We had plenty of drinks and a large cooler of food to have lunch and snacks on the boat. We ate breakfast in the morning at the hotel before we got on the water and then at night we would just go to a different restaurant in Page. We actually found some restaurants that had great food and it was nice to not have to wait and cook something when we were hungry getting off the lake. Some favorite spots to boat around Wahweap are warm creek, cookie jar, and maverick cove. We also loved going through antelope canyon and riding the paddle boards through there. My parents have these great paddle boards that come in a sleek bag and you inflate them when you want to use them. They are a little large to keep on the ski boat, but for one day it worked out great to take them out. We also did lots of surfing, wake boarding, and tube rides. The water was a little choppy for some good water skiing so we spent our time on everything else. The kids had so much fun playing on the rocks and even cliff jumping at a few spots. I got Capri and Liam out on the beginner waterski to get the feel of it and I was so proud they went by themselves! The weather was also great without much wind and it felt so good jumping in the water, the kids were pretty much in there all day long.

After staying in Lake Powell for a few days, we decided to enjoy the rest of the vacation in St George since we didn’t have the houseboat for this trip. We stayed in a great house rental in Paradise Village which is perfect for families. There was a bedroom with a bathroom for each married couple and then a bunk bed room for the kids. We also had a hot tub with an upstairs deck with a fire pit and a nice big kitchen to cook in. But the highlight was the pool area because there is a big waterslide playground for kids that they had a blast at. It was perfect for all of the younger kids with us and we also liked being close to Snow Canyon State Park which had great hikes as well as Tuacahn theater which we usually always go to while in St George. We also spent a day boating at Sand Hollow Reservoir which is like a mini Lake Powell.

I also wanted to mention that last year we did a really fun trip down to St George at the same time of year and we stayed at Zion Village which is really close to Zion National Park and we loved that location because we did so many amazing hikes thru Zion. Also, the house that we had at Zion Village was larger with two bunk bed rooms for all the grandkids plus a game room and even more bedrooms. The pool was still fun with a lazy river and pool area, it just didn’t have the big water park feature as in Paradise Village so they each have their perks just in different ends of Southern Utah. I also have an older blog post here with some favorite places in St George.
